What Is E-Invoicing in the UAE?
E-Invoicing — or Electronic Invoicing — is the UAE government's initiative to digitise the entire invoicing process between businesses. Instead of issuing paper invoices or simple PDF documents, businesses will be required to issue invoices in a standardised electronic format that is automatically reported to the Federal Tax Authority (FTA).
Think of it as a shift from paper trails to a fully digital, automated, and government-connected invoicing system. Every invoice you issue goes through an approved digital channel — making tax reporting faster, more accurate, and completely paperless.
💡 The Good News
While E-Invoicing may sound complex, businesses that already use good accounting software like Zoho, QuickBooks, or Odoo will find the transition straightforward. The software connects to an approved service provider and handles the rest automatically — no manual work needed once set up.
E-Invoicing Phases & Deadlines
The UAE is rolling out E-Invoicing in two phases. It is critical that your business understands which phase applies to you and when your deadline is.
Phase 1
Large Businesses
📊 Businesses with annual revenue exceeding AED 50 Million
Mandatory Deadline
31 October 2026
(Extended from original deadline of 31 July 2026)
Phase 2
All Businesses
🏢 Mandatory for ALL businesses operating in the UAE
Mandatory Deadline
31 July 2027
⚠️ Important Deadline Notes
Phase 1 was originally set for 31 July 2026 but has been extended to 31 October 2026 — giving large businesses more preparation time.
Phase 2 deadline of 31 July 2027 applies to ALL UAE businesses — regardless of size, revenue, or free zone status.
Even if Phase 1 doesn't apply to you yet, we strongly recommend preparing now — waiting until 2027 will mean a last-minute rush with higher costs and limited ASP availability.
How Does E-Invoicing Work?
The UAE E-Invoicing system works through a network of government-approved service providers. Here is the simple flow of how an e-invoice is created and reported:
You Create an Invoice in Your Accounting Software
Using Zoho, QuickBooks, Odoo or any other approved accounting platform, you create an invoice as you normally would — entering client details, line items, and amounts.
Software Sends It to Your ASP Automatically
Your accounting software is connected to your chosen Accredited Service Provider (ASP). The invoice data is automatically transmitted to the ASP in the required format — no manual steps needed.
ASP Validates & Reports to FTA
The ASP validates your invoice, assigns it a unique identifier, and reports it to the Federal Tax Authority in real time. This replaces manual VAT reporting for invoiced transactions.
Invoice Delivered to Your Customer
The validated e-invoice is delivered to your customer electronically — via email, portal, or direct system integration. No printing or physical delivery required.
Everything is Stored Digitally & Automatically
All invoices are stored digitally in compliance with FTA requirements. No paper filing, no manual record-keeping, no lost documents. Your entire invoice history is accessible at any time.
What Is an ASP (Accredited Service Provider)?
An ASP — Accredited Service Provider — is a company officially approved by the UAE Ministry of Finance to process and transmit e-invoices to the FTA on your behalf. Think of the ASP as the bridge between your accounting software and the government's tax system.
🔗 What an ASP Does
Receives invoice data from your software, validates it, assigns a unique identifier, and reports it to the FTA in real time.
💰 ASP Costs
Costs vary from one ASP provider to another. You must check pricing directly with each approved ASP on the official list.
📋 How to Choose an ASP
You must select your ASP from the official list provided by the UAE Ministry of Finance (MOE). Only MOE-listed ASPs are legally approved.
🔄 Software Integration
Your accounting software connects to the ASP via API. Once set up, the process is fully automated — no manual data entry required.
📌 Important — Choose Only From the Official MOE List
The UAE Ministry of Finance maintains an official list of Accredited Service Providers (ASPs). You must only engage an ASP that appears on this official list. Using an unapproved provider will not satisfy your legal e-invoicing obligations.
Check the official and most up-to-date list of approved ASPs directly on the UAE Ministry of Finance website at mof.gov.ae before making any decision.
Note: ASP pricing varies significantly between providers. We recommend comparing at least 2-3 approved ASPs before committing, as costs depend on invoice volume, integration requirements, and support level.

The key to a smooth E-Invoicing transition is having the right accounting software already in place. Businesses using modern cloud-based accounting tools will simply need to connect their software to an approved ASP — and the rest is automated.

Frequently Asked Questions
Does E-Invoicing apply to all businesses in the UAE?
Phase 1 (deadline 31 October 2026) applies to businesses with annual revenue exceeding AED 50 million. Phase 2 (deadline 31 July 2027) is mandatory for ALL businesses in the UAE, regardless of size or revenue.
Can I choose any company as my ASP?
No — you must select your Accredited Service Provider (ASP) only from the official list published by the UAE Ministry of Finance on mof.gov.ae. Using an unapproved provider will not satisfy your legal obligations.
How much does an ASP cost?
ASP pricing varies from one provider to another and depends on factors such as your invoice volume and integration requirements. You must check costs directly with each ASP on the official MOE list, as ZMC Solutions does not provide ASP services.
Do I need new accounting software for E-Invoicing?
Not necessarily — if you already use Zoho, QuickBooks, Odoo, Xero, Sage, or a similar cloud accounting platform, you will likely just need to connect it to your chosen ASP. If you are still using Excel or paper, you will need to move to proper accounting software first.
What happens if I miss the E-Invoicing deadline?
Penalties for non-compliance with E-Invoicing obligations will be set by the FTA. Based on the UAE's existing penalty framework for tax non-compliance, businesses should expect significant fines for late adoption.
Can ZMC Solutions help me set up my accounting software?
Yes — ZMC Solutions offers a full accounting software setup and customisation service for AED 500. We configure Zoho Books, QuickBooks, Odoo, or any other platform to your specific business needs, including VAT settings, chart of accounts, invoice templates, and team training.
Does E-Invoicing replace VAT filing?
E-Invoicing automates the reporting of individual transactions to the FTA in real time, which significantly simplifies VAT filing. However, VAT returns must still be filed periodically. The data will be largely pre-populated from your e-invoice records.
